The ‘Sarah Island’ Project

The ‘Sarah Island’ project.

From Tasmania’s West Coast Shores.

So I came up with an idea. To take a clinker built boat from Tasmania’s past and to re-create it’s remains into a show piece table. So I began looking for the perfect boat. Two years of waiting and finally the boat found me.

This Huon Pine Pine built boat was crafted in Strahan on Tasmania’s west coast early last century when things like this were built as part of normal day living. It was made to ferry people and supplies along the west coast shores and Sarah Island, one of Australia’s most brutal penal colonies. As time passed the boat was in need of restoration. This took part in the early 60’s with the addition of extra horsepower with a small motor added. It was used for fishing and pleasure until it once again needed further restoration. The boat was brought to the Northwest Coast of Tasmania where it has sat dry for the past 30 years. As this time passed the boat had passed its last chance of restoration and started a new life of ‘ruin’.

Once I cast my eyes on this boat I couldn’t wait to begin on its next life. I plan to use the Bow and Stern of the boat keeping its inherit looks and history. I plan to use premium cuts of Huon pine to create a table top. The rest will be decided during the construction phase. If you share the same idea and want custody of this table when completed then please get in touch.
