The Providence

This table is the first of its kind created with a combination of Huon Pine Burl and stainless steel. I wanted to explore and find new ways to re-create the standard resin table. In the past table makers have manufactured a mould in which casting resin is poured around the irregular shaped timber creating parallel edges and symmetry around the perimeter of the table top. This table was to be different.

The slice of burl was purchased from a furniture maker in Hobart who was releasing his stock edging his way into retirement. Once I had the burl I began to refine its jagged edges giving it a smooth transition into what would be a stainless steel surround. The holes throughout the burl were carefully filled with more pieces of Huon pine giving the table top a uniform and flat surface. These inserts reflect the myriad of lakes and tarns scattered across the Tasmanian Central Highlands giving enjoyment to nature lovers, fishers and recreational activities.

Once the shape of the burl was completed the manufacturing of the steel surround began. Being the first table of its kind no information on ‘how’ could be outsourced. Templates were down, templates were made until the perfect fit was achieved. Then the stainless was cut and laminated to more Huon Pine underneath giving the steel structure and depth.

The base has been made using Blackheart Sassafrass for its legs and Pine for its centre rail. More stainless steel has been used to carry all the seperate elements of this table making it complete. The timber work has been blackened creating an explosion of colour and contrast within itself and against the brushed finish on the stainless surrounds. This table is available now and price includes Australia wide delivery.

Table dimensions - 2.4metres long x 1.1 metres wide.
